Tax workshop for international students, staff and faculty announced
By Sherrie Voss Matthews, International Media & Marketing Coordinator
The UTSA Payroll Office and the Office of International Programs will offer a tax workshop for international students, faculty and staff who are at UTSA on non-immigrant visas, such as H1-B, F-1, J-1 or the like.
This workshop will help explain the forms needed, how and when to file, and other insights. The workshop will be held on 2-5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, in the University Room (2.06.04) in the Business Building on the Main Campus.
International students, faculty and staff are required by law to file:
- Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 8843 (Statement for Exempt Individuals)
- 1040NR-EZ (U.S. Income Tax Return for Certain Nonresident Aliens With No Dependents) or
- 1040NR (U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return).
All F-1 and J-1 visa holders who are considered nonresident aliens for tax purposes and who had no income during 2012 must file Form 8843 by June 15, 2013.
For those who earned income in the United States during 2012, income tax returns must be filed by April 15, 2013.
Failure to properly file these forms each year can cause problems with an international student's immigration status.
No registration is needed.
